Gurmehar Kaur, the Delhi University student whose tweets against the alleged hooliganism by ABVP took the social media by storm has decided to withdraw from the protest march in Delhi University, today. She told via her twitter account that she can’t take any more of this and has decided to stay away from all the controversy. Her mother told that Gurmehar Kaur has already left Delhi.

Even as she announced her decision to withdraw from the campaign against ABVP, Gurmehar today got the unequivocal support of her teachers of Lady Shri Ram College. Meanwhile, she urged other students to continue to take part in the campaign.

A huge number of students are protesting in Delhi University against the student’s political party ABVP after it’s members attacked students, lecturers and journalists in the Ramjas college on February 22.

Many students and teachers got together at the Delhi University for the “DU Against Goondagardi (hooliganism)” protest.

Gurmehar, earlier this week has become an online sensation when she raised her voice against ABVP for the violence in North campus. She received a lot of support for her campaign but at the same time, she also received a lot of abuse and violent threats online. She also claimed that she is receiving rape threats from various people online.

Gurmehar was provided security by the police after she received violent threats.

Her father was in the Indian army and was martyred in the year 1999 while fighting terrorists. Gurmehar was also targeted for a video post from last year in which she was seen appealing for peace between India and Pakistan through placards with messages. One of the placards read, “Pakistan did not kill my dad, war killed him.”

In a series of emotional tweets, she said that she said that she has been going through a lot and this is all she can take. She decided not to be the part of campaign anymore.

Gurmehar Kaur’s grandfather, Kanwaljeet Singh spoke to media and said that he is pained by the threats issued to his granddaughter and is worried about her safety. He also defended Gurmehar saying she never said anything wrong to evoke such a strong response.

Gurmehar has drawn both praise and ire from various celebrities for her posts. The likes of Virender Sehwag and Yogeshwar Dutt and Randeep Hooda trolled her while there were many like Rahul Gandhi, Javed Akhtar, Arvind Kejriwal and Barkha Datt came out in support of the 20-year-old girl.

Meanwhile, the issue of violence by ABVP in Ramjas college is only growing big with protests from both sides to counter each other. The teacher-student protest march against ABVP comes a day after  ABVP took out a Tiranga march in Delhi University.

The march will start at Khalsa College in North Campus and will end at the Arts Faculty. Members of Congress and AAP are also expected to join the protest.

NSUI which is backed by Indian National Congress will also organise a symbolic one-day hunger strike at the arts faculty which will be followed by a ‘Mashaal’ rally.
