Samsung Galaxy S8 review- A class apart smartphone with Infinity Display

Samsung has pinned all their hopes on Galaxy S8

The concept of smartphones has become a common phenomenon now and people are getting used to it. Every month a new smartphone is being launched and it seems that smartphones are raining from the sky, every now and then. What uses to wonder struck people before does not excite them anymore. And we can’t blame them for that. I mean all smartphones appear same. In looks and in features there is not much to choose from. Samsung has made an effort to break that monotonous trend in the smartphone market with its latest smartphone Samsung Galaxy S8.

Samsung has put together their years of work and combined it with new innovation in order to produce a different type of beast in the smartphone market. It was the doctor’s call for Samsung as their reputation as the global leaders in the smartphone market has taken a major blow in recent times. The Note 7 blunder has left them in deep crisis and they sure need something special to regain the trust of the customers. Whether Samsung Galaxy S8 has in it to take Samsung back to where it once belonged or not only time will tell. Here we bring you the Samsung Galaxy S8 review.

DESIGN

WOW…This will be your spontaneous reaction when you take a first look at the Samsung Galaxy S8. Believe me, it is a stunning smartphone. Its design sets it apart from the rest of the smartphones. No other phone comes close to this device when it comes to design.

The curved rear of Samsung Galaxy S8 fits smoothly in your hand. The glass seems to glitter when the light falls on it. The phone is available in three colours- bright silver,  grey with a bluish tinge and dark black. The black colour is the best option as the shiny sides merge with the display and give it an exquisite look.

There are volume and standby buttons on the side. A new button joins them- Bixby button.

the thinner and lighter a smartphone is, the better it is. Samsung Galaxy is very thin and light. It weighs only 155 grammes. In spite of thin design, the phone offers a microSD slot along with a nano-SIM slot.

The phone is dust and water resistant and can survive for about half an hour in water.

Apple, in its recently launched phone, removed the traditional headphone jack. It indicated that it might be the end of the 3.5mm jack. But in Galaxy S8 you will find it. That is a very good step as far as I am concerned.

Almost the whole front of Galaxy S8 is screen and that gives it a unique look. The curved look makes it feels like if you are holding only the display in your hands.

The company has addressed the issue of errant touches with S8. In previous curved smartphones from Samsung, there was a tendency to register unintentional touches on the side but it is not a problem anymore in S8.

S8’s big screen has forced Samsung to compromise with the fingerprint scanner which can be a bit uncomfortable.

DISPLAY

Not only Samsung Galaxy S8 has the best design but its display too is their finest till date. Its big screen is the reason why it is different from other smartphones in the market. The company calls it the “Infinite Display”. S8 has done away with the traditional 16:9 ratio and comes with a new 18.5:9 aspect ratio. This makes the display taller and skinnier. The Galaxy S8 has a 5.8-inch display which expands 6.2 inches in S8 Plus.

Despite its big display it is easy to use the device comfortably with one hand. However, it might be a little difficult to stretch the notification bar with your thumb.

SOFTWARE

The software has always been the weak point of Samsung. However, this time around the company has made a huge improvement in this department. It is far from an ideal software but is safe to say that Samsung has done a pretty good job this time.

Samsung Galaxy S8 runs on Android 7.0 Nougat. The home screen is kept neat and simple. The icons seem more mature and on screen, buttons are angular and edgy. Only a handful of app shortcuts along with nice big weather widget appear on the home screen. You can easily switch between your app tray and home screen with a quick swipe up.

You can easily navigate the settings menu and it is straightforward. There is also a search option available to find anything in it. While you explore further into the settings you will find more options and configurations. You can find many themes available.

S8 has unveiled a new software feature called Bixby. Samsung is so excited about it that they have dedicated a special button on the side of the phone that launches Bixby. However, it proves to be a big disappointment as it actually offers nothing new. If you push the Bixby button twice, a home screen panel will appear which will display the various information based on your interests. you can also plug it into the 3rd party services such as Facebook, Twitter etc. It also provides the news updates, the reminders and other things based on your daily routine. However, it is nothing new and we have seen such things before and therefore it doesn’t excite us. Bixby also appears in the camera and gallery application but again it offers functions that are quite similar to what Amazon and Google are already offering. It is like many functions are grouped together in Bixby which are already available on Android. Bixby has a long way to go before it can really be of some use.

You will find the iris scanner in Galaxy S8. It is much faster than it was in note 7. This face recognition tool works faster but is more insecure too. You can easily fool it by using a photo.

CAMERA

The camera has been one of the strong points of Samsung smartphones. The camera in note 7 was excellent and in Samsung Galaxy S8 it has improved even more. It does not have a dual sensor system or wide-angle lens or variable aperture. But still, it clicks stunning pictures.

It uses a single 12-megapixel sensor behind a wide f/1.7 lens setup. It has introduced a new multi-frame image processor which captures three shots every single time you click, leaving you with a sharper shot.

The camera is incredibly fast. You can open the camera by double tapping the power button and it opens faster than any other phone. It focuses equally fast. It also balances tricky exposures very well.  Whether you are clicking landscape shots or portraits in daytime or at night you will get wonderful pictures every time.

The camera captures the deepest of details wonderfully well. That wide aperture helps in taking great shots during low lighting environment. The autofocus and shutter are also fast.

The front camera uses a new 8-megapixel sensor with a f/1.7 aperture. It also has autofocus which is rarely seen in front cameras.Overall, the

Overall, the camera of Samsung Galaxy S8 is worth everything. It is one of the best in business.

BATTERY

The battery of S8 is on par with last year’s note 7 and the S8 plus matches the S7 Edge in this department. If you are a light user then the battery of smaller phone will last almost an entire day. If you are a phone addict i.e you use your phone a lot then you will need to charge it daily at some point. For heavy users, I would suggest a larger S8 Plus as it will provide more battery life. Both smartphones have the option for both wire and wireless charging so that you can charge it away from home whenever you feel like it.

Both smartphones have the option for both wire and wireless charging so that you can charge it away from home whenever you feel like it. That is a good thing to have.

The biggest concern for Samsung is that the battery of S8 does not repeat the infamous explosion saga which put their reputation at stake last year. We hope that it doesn’t happen as Samsung has really put a lot of money and time to overcome that issue.

PERFORMANCE

Samsung Galaxy S8 promises to deliver some stunning performance. S8 has a lot of features and specifications in it and some of them are so advanced that it might take some time to get used to them.

The handsets which were sold in the US and Western market were the first phones which feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor, while the rest of the market has to contend with Samsung’s own similarly equipped Exynos processor. Both the processors make the phone faster and more responsive.

S8 boasts of 4 GB RAM with 64 GB internal memory which is good enough. There is a microSD card which can expand up to 256 GB slot and you will also find a radio which supports both gigabit LTE and gigabit Wi-Fi.

It is also the first smartphone which uses Bluetooth 5.0 which not only has a better range but also can deliver audio files to two devices at the same time.

The games run smooth without any problems. They load fast and you can play them without dropping any frames.

AnTuTu benchmark gives S8 the score of 173,292 which is among the best. In 3D gaming tests, it gets the score of 70,546 which is higher than the likes of  LG G6 and iPhone 7 plus.

Overall this smartphone is really fast and satisfies your expectations in most departments.

There are very few disappointments here and there but nothing is perfect. They wouldn’t stop you from buying it.

It is a genuine upgrade and you can feel the difference once you use it.
